Any cost?

Also, did anyone catch hear Pitino on Mike & Mike this morning. Specifically, referring to scouting for a tourney he indicated that a player shot 82% from his left and 28% from his right. Always looking for 110% from his players, I guess?

It's funny that "big west" has been hurt by several losses from out west teams. College hoops is a east, Midwest dominated sport. Fuck the west.

RE: Bracket
One thing we should start doing with these brackets in the coming years is someone make an all chalk bracket that doesnt count but just used as a measuring stick. I did one here a couple years ago in the tourney we did and it didnt win but it was close. I find it pretty intersting to include one of those.

That's based on some kind of computerized probability or something of that nature, I'd assume. In terms of the best team and the most people picking MSU to win, I'd say that has to be the biggest. I read that one of sites had 23% of people picking MSU to win......the title. How much longer before a 16 beats a 1? Parity grows and grows every year. Teams like FGCU and SFAU, etc are downright fucking dangerous. Especially in a tournament format where you only have a couple days (or just one) to prepare.

Going by the picks from yahoo's research tools, this year among people submitting brackets its 27% MSU(second only to kansas) with UNC in a distant third for everyone who submitted a bracket in the yahoo tourney, which I would consider a good sample pool. Yahoo is pretty relevant on the average fan submitting who they think will win in the tournament as yahoo's tourney challenge is pretty popular:

https://tournament.fantasysports.yahoo.c...on?round=6

I dont know what formula the prior post I submitted was using. Maybe J-rye or somebody can chime in but nonetheless they are both up there in the history of upsets.

Yahoo has a "Scenario Generator" tool that's useful if you want to play out the rest of the tournament scenarios in our pool.

RE: Bracket
I lead possible points so I have that going for me. I have a significant advantage there over half of the field. I have some picks that I don't think anyone else has or very few. So there is a good chance they bust and I finish middle of the pack or they come through and I run away with it. The south has treated me like a king (only losing one game, picking temple over iowa) but I need Miami to beat Nova and Maryland to beat Kansas and I'll feel really good about my chances. That and a continued Virginia run is necessary. I haven't even got to watch the Cavs. Have they been playing well?

RE: Bracket
In terms of 1 seeds I think it's pretty clear the remaining paths in terms of difficult are
1)Kansas
2)Oregon

3)UNC
4)Virginia

Kansas has a very tough path here. Maryland has massively underachieved to this point but in a one game elimination tourney I wouldn't want to play them then they get the winner of Miami-Nova ouch. Oregon's path is pretty difficult, and I think they will take care of Duke but I see Oklahoma advancing out of that regional. UNC has a tough matchup with Indiana but seems like Indiana is going to try, and outrun UNC. Indiana is dangerous with Ferrell, and good shooters but I like UNC's odds in a high paced game. Virginia has a tough game with Iowa State. I'm interested in how they adjust the pack line defense because Iowa State can light up their defense if they get open threes. Niang presents a nightmare matchup for them. Syracuse, and Gonzaga are hot but I don't think either of those two would give Virginia much of a challenge.

Playing with the scenario generator I think I need two things to win:

1) Obviously since I have them going all the way, UNC needs to win the title

2) Kansas just needs to make the final four.

I'm guessing I'm not going to win. lol

RE: Bracket
If all the higher seeds advance, including #1 overall Kansas over #2 UVA as champ, I believe I win. (I'm assuming they're using true seeds & not just deferring to your own picks if it's a 1 vs. 1 or 2 vs. 2 in the Scenario Generator).

Interesting that if you use the RPI, only Syracuse and Gonzaga switch places compared to using Higher Seeds in the Generator. One day I have a dream that the committee will no longer use the god-awful RPI 10 different ways (SOS, Record vs. Top 25, Top 50, Top 100, etc.) and justify it as merely being "one of the criteria."

Edit: I don't have the time to do KenPom scenario generator right now, wonder how similar/different it is to the RPI scenario.

Kenpom is a good tool most of the time. It gets a few teams wrong every year though. This year it way overrated Kentucky, and Wichita State. The problem with the committee is the metric they use changes most from year to year. Tulsa getting in the field was laughable.

Just playing with it some more, I believe you win regardless of what else happens if Kansas wins it all.

If Virginia wins it all I think DHC wins regardless of what else happens.

Yeah, I meant with the Scenario Generator, had to cut my first post short for work reasons.

Using KenPom would be an improvement over the RPI but it shouldn't be the only tool. Just like using Vegas odds would be unfair to the small schools. If we used Vegas odds, teams like UK could lose half their games but go on an 8 game winning streak in February and get a 1 seed. Plus, big schools like that would then never feel obligated to schedule the mid-major teams and then the committee would have even less data to use when seeding and bracketing the tournament.

Using non-conference wins, non-conference strength of schedule, and non-con schedule intent (ex: schedule Vandy who were projected to be a Top 10 team but they end up a Top 50 team) is healthy for the sport. More important, interesting games during football season and more depth of data for the committee which is more fair for all teams.

With the way I draft in the CEBE, you'd think I'd have Syracuse over Hawaii in the Championship game. I'm just glad I apparently filled out a bracket without Sparty as the champ. Actually, think I have may have one on ESPN or CBS with Oklahoma winning it all.
