Season To-Date Superlatives
Looking for a scale that shows where some of the individual performers are in relationship to their competition in the various categories. To accomplish this, I am establishing what a "star" performer would be expected to do in each category, weighting the actual performance of the league leaders season to-date, and highlighting who is really carrying their team to victories. For the purposes of these season trackers, the Weird Science Frankenballer would be expected to put up a stat line of 20/10/6/3.5. While free throws are more difficult to assess scientifically given the volumes different players shoot, I will use this stat instead to seperate players in a sort of ranking tie-breaker.

12/21 Update - A short-staffed week leaves many categories unchanged as the leaders had really seperated themselves in Week 4.

Points - Cat Barber - 1.11
* The king is dead! Long live the king! Behind a ridiculous 29.5ppg week, Cat Barber is back amongst the superlative leaders, this time at the points position. His insane week, doubled with Grayson Allen's pedestrian 12.5ppg showing, places the longest-reigning stat leader out of the top spot. Should be very interesting to see how Allen responds with conference play just around the corner.

Rebounds - Charles Mitchell - 1.19
* Mitchell and Allen have seen similar showings in their calling card ability, with short weeks and no-shows paralleling one another throughout the season. Mitchell's no-show in Week 6 was not as damaging as Allen's, however, as the cushion he built up through the first 5 weeks was enough to weather a 6rpg week (and 0'fer Sunday performance) to maintain his rebounding lead over Devin Thomas (1.07) and Amile Jefferson (1.03).

Assists - Xavier Rathan-Mayes - 1.03
* The continued ramp-up in competition sees many of our stat-leaders take hits to their YTD averages. XRM is no exception, posting only 4 apg to lose a full 0.1 points on his assists mark. Similar to Mitchell, however, the lead he had built in the first 5 weeks was too much for his competition to overcome, as XRM still leads Cat Barber (0.93) by 0.1.

Defense - Tyler Lydon - 1.06
* One player having no such trouble with competition ramping up is the lone freshman to appear in these rankings. After another 3 dpg week, Lydon re-assumes his sole possession of the top defensive spot while improving his score ranking by 0.03 points. BeeJay Anya dropped during the same period by 0.06 points to open a comfortable margin for Mr. Lydon headed into the break.

All-around - Devin Thomas - 3.08
* Another week, another dominating performance from the league's mid-season MVP. Thomas's Lydon-like defensive performance in Week 6 (3.5 dpg) and Michael Gbinije-like effort Tuesday (18/10/5/7) help him expand the gap between himself and the rest of the CEBE Top 5.

All-Around Top 5
1) Thomas
2) Michael Gbinije
3) Cat Barber
4) Zach Auguste
5) Tyler Lydon

Dropped out of the top 5: Charles Mitchell (5th to 7th)
Biggest riser: Marcus Paige (24th to 17th)
Biggest drop: Jaron Blossomgame (6th to 15th)
New to the Top 50: Abdul Malik-Abu (42nd), Malachi Richardson (47th), Dennis Clifford (48th), VJ Beachem (50th)

RE: Season To-Date Superlatives
Season superlatives updated through Week 3. We have lots of new leaders as the young season continues to unfold, including an early leader for run-away 6th Man of the Year.

RE: Season To-Date Superlatives
We barely even need stats to know that Cat Barber is dominating the FT% category. He's making 11 free throws per game. I'd guess that's the most single category dominance of any player in the league

RE: Season To-Date Superlatives
Can we get this thread pinned along with the other recurring topics for the league?

Might be optimal to put the superlatives comment, currently listed second under the explainer comment, on top of the thread or combine them, if possible.

RE: Season To-Date Superlatives
Basing it off the season averages for each player (minimum number of games to qualify, so Cornrow Hudson's one game for Wake won't be included) as listed on Sports Reference. The rest is in the description in the first post.

RE: Season To-Date Superlatives
How did you establish the 20/10/6/3.5 line? Did you take averages of the top 10 players in each category?

RE: Season To-Date Superlatives
I haven't put the 20/10/6/3.5 benchmarks through a heavy amount of rigor. What I would LIKE to do when this is expanded/enhanced is to look at the top 5 in the ACC for the past 3-5 years and establish a rolling average superlative off which we can gauge current year performance. That is something I'm going to improve sooner rather than later, but admittedly have not done yet.

So, who will replace LeDay and Thomas in the All-Around Top 5 come January? Seems inevitable.

Grayson Allen and Jaron Blossomgame. Any metric without Allen in the top 5 is doing it wrong Wink

Updated the superlatives. Only one change among the top category leaders, but we also have a new #1 player in the league. RIP Mr. Boogers.

RE: Season To-Date Superlatives
As stated in the op, free throws are not weighted by this system. I'm tinkering with some methods for assigning a value to % and volume of free throws taken. Still under construction.
