Preseason News thread
I've only been keeping up with my own players for the most part, but at least someone in the Coastal Division might want to read this too. I'm not really interested in article's written by people who know less than we do, so make sure it's a credible source if it's in this thread (i.e. coaches and practice reports)
  • Michael Gbinije will be the starting point guard for Cuse
  • Mike Brey on Bonzie Colson: "“He’s in much better shape,” Brey said. “There’s some basketball instincts there that we talked about last year that you just can’t coach. And they were amazing efficient in a 18-22 minute clip, playing time. What does he do when he gets 30 minutes? Or 32? And that’s my plan for him. Again, I think he can be amazingly efficient."
  • From Boston College practice: "Eli Carter, a graduate transfer from Florida, looked like he will fill the role of Olivier Hanlan as the true playmaker of the team while Jerome Robinson and other younger players get acclimated to the system. Carter showed some good passing ability off of screens and had a nice two-man game working with Clifford several times in Tuesday’s session."
  • Rick Pitino: "I think they'll be, as I look at our strengths, one of the leading shot-blocking teams in the nation, something I've never had." Good news for owners of Mathiang and Onuaku. Spalding, Mahmoud, and Adel add to that formidable defensive front.
  • During Clemson's intrasquad scrimmage: "[Jaron Blossomgame] finished with a scrimmage-high 24 points. He was efficient, hitting 7-11 field goals and 9-11 at the free throw line."
  • Xavier Rathan-Mayes on his teammate: “I’ve never played with a better shot blocker than I have with Christ (Koumadje),”Rathan-Mayes said. “He’s definitely going to be a factor to us”

Brey's Notre Dame teams have always seemed like a smoke & mirrors outfit.

Thought about this almost as soon as I hit "Post Reply". Connaughton wasn't exactly a tower at the PF spot. Better hope Colson can shoot the three as well as PC did. And while it seems likely he can, I do wonder if Colson can rebound at a high level with all the additional minutes. It's one thing to run in there for 10 minutes and go "bull in a china shop" in every facet of the game. Can he give that same or similar effort for 30?

RE: Preseason News thread
A far as UNC goes, Inside Carolina's Ben Sherman got the oppurtunity to watch practice yesterday and came away with the following

* Berry talked in interviews about how much he focused on his jumper, and how his mindset was to be the starting PG for the opener. He played like it today.

* Can see the added assertiveness from Jackson on offense and especially on the boards.

* Convinced Pinson is just some final conditioning away from being ready. He didn't hold back when in there. They're just being extra cautious with his foot.

* When viewing Britt as the 3rd PG, he's indeed a big benefit to this team. Had some great plays (steals, drives) today.

* Johnson got a lot of practice with his trademark dunk. Was at the rim a lot. Had some really athletic plays, too, the highlight was a blocked Britt layup attempt that he sent sidelines out of bounds - it must have gone 20 feet.

* Small sample size, but overall Hicks and Johnson looked similar to how we know them from a skills standpoint. For Johnson just a matter of more consistent motor, for Hicks it's getting a bigger opportunity.

They have Jackson 6'1, Vasturia 6'5, and Beachem 6'8 outside who all hit 40+ threes at 40%+ last season. Its crazy how much outside firepower they have. I don't think Colson will need to hit many threes, but he'll need to develop a reliable midrange game to keep defenses honest. He has a nice free throw stroke, so that ought to translate. Expect to hear something about Colson's wingspan at least 10 times this season.

The lack of info on Meeks is a bit unsettling.

Looking at those teams, there is zero excuse for the white team to be down. Pretty sad really. Levitch and Stockman with a double digit lead

Yeah I recall thinking the same thing from the first. I really hope that this doesn't turn into watching some good individual offensive performances with L's beside them. Thinking the worst.

Those projections would be great, Grayson Allen as the leading scorer in the ACC!!

Was Adel really good? Couldn't follow since I had to watch my Blue Jays implode for a loss and the Florida Gators crap themselves in the 4th quarter.

Adel was incredible. Really, really high upside. He'll play a lot. Maybe start from the jump. Really good defensive player which is essential to get PT.

If Gbinije scores 11ppg, I'll eat my preseason player rankings.

I do like what they're writing about Holmes and Thornton, though. If I have two guards scoring double digits and passing out 4apg, I can move Gbinije to either the F or UTIL spot and be prepared for just about any scenario.

I don't think they're perfect but who could be? These rankings picked 4 of our top 5 last year. They've got something going on. And I thought they underrated Gbinije and overrated Thornton. Who wouldn't have expected Mangok to get 8&6 last year? Who doesn't expect him to get it this year? If he doesn't, I think that's him underachieving moreso than them being unaware.

Count me as someone who isn't nearly as high Gbinije as everyone else here is. Thought he was mid-2nd round with Top 10 upside due to his multiple position eligibility. I don't think you reached for him on the turn, but I'm not sure he'll equal his late 2015 season heroics either. And that FT%...yikes.

If Gbinije isn't putting up AT LEAST his late-season "heroics", who exactly is doing anything for them? Christmas is gone, Cooney is nothing more than a long-range specialist IMO, and there is essentially 0% chance that Dejuan Coleman or Tyler Roberson are going to become Christmas this season. If Gbinije isn't putting up the 16/5/4/2 line he did in the last month of the year, Cuse is going to struggle to break 50 a game. I'm not necessarily expecting any more than those numbers, but I don't think I need to. If he can put up a line like that, he's among the top 5 ACC players EASILY.

PS - In those same 10 games to end the year, Gbinije was shooting 67% from the line. I expect that to be at least 70% with an offseason to work and Boeheim telling him he is THE man this season and needs to make opponents pay for fouling him. Jim is comfortable enough to declare him the starting PG, so the ball is going to be in his hands at crunch time this year.

I think 13/5/5/2 is probably more like it. He's not a great shooter. No Christmas means more possessions but also he's the scouting report ala 2006 Taquan Dean. Either way, I'd take it.

Love the upside, wouldn't be shocking if he's Terry Rozier 2.0, but I'm not sure he's a lock for Top 10 CEBE player is all.

Coincidentally, just realized StatSheet was shut down this summer. UGHHHH.

Bad new for the Doms. Codi Miller - McIntyre likely to miss a couple of weeks of the season after surgery for a foot fracture. As we saw with Paine last year, foot injuries are muy no bueno.

That would be 4 of 7 seasons without my first round pick. That's really incredible odds. I'd never pick a Louisville player first.

Pitino said Mathiang is "by far the best frontcourt player" but will come off the bench to avoid foul trouble. I hope that's just coach speak. If Mathiang is "by far the best", UofL is fucked
