College Basketball thread(Other than Louisville)
No really good games tonight. Only team that could potentially be on upset alert is Virginia. They're playing @ James Madison without Perrantes but James Madison sucks so I don't see it happening. Nearly all of the top 25 are playing tonight but mostly a lot of blowouts coming.

RE: College Basketball thread(Other than Louisville)
Louisville is most definitely on upset alert. People are really selling Minnesota short. NIT champs returning 70% of their production. Plus Richard knows Rick's gameplan inside and out. It wouldn't surprise me to see Miami take down Florida either. Florida is playing without Chris Walker, which leaves Jon Horford as their best interior player (yikes). Miami got two huge transfers with McClellan and Rodriguez. They could end up a tournament team.

edit: looks like Miami and UF isn't till Monday

Uh Louisville vs minnesota. Father vs son. On a ship. Even homerism aside, I'd definitely watch that one. Louisville is definitely on upset alert. And I'll still gladly get my first look at many other teams.

Damn, you got me j. But either way, don't expect UL to blow out minnesota. It will be a good game.

the initial spread was Louisville -8.5. I'd take Minnesota and the points

+1

A) We hate opening the season against Big Ten teams (see: Iowa 2003, Purdue 2002)
B) Little Richard knows his father more than father knows son (experience as an assistant)
C) Minnesota has the right type of talent (Maurice Walker, Elliott Eliason) to challenge our rebounding and interior D. Walker in particular was big to the Minnesota NIT run.
D) It's in a hanger... if I've seen nothing else from these types of games, it's that the shooting and general offensive flow suffer. Effects of the sight lines, whatever outdoor influences might be present... dunno, but I haven't seen many of these games end in pretty ball.

I'll take a W in any fashion and get back to the contiguous 48 satisfied.

Forgot Tennessee is also playing VCU. VCU only favored by 8 so there could be another good one.

Pair of Dominators playing @ 6 on ESPNU. Duke VS Presbyterian. I'll probably do some flipping back and forth between Florida also. Louisville game 7-9. Then maybe watch UK for a few minutes until I throw up, then look at the night lineup. I'd like to catch some of the VCU game. Fun team to watch.

Am I out of the loop or are there no big time early tournaments this year? Maybe I'm early and it'll be in the next couple weeks but I thought they usually opened with good tournaments like the preseason NIT, Battle for Atlantis, etc.

Okay Duke looks to be in midseason form and Okafor is good. Really good. I know that Presbyterian is obviously outclassed but Duke has A LOT of talent. The 9 burger boys are certainly showing up. This team is very deep almost to a fault for fantasy coaches.

Looks like the SEC is as good as ever.

VCU 85 - Tennessee 69
Georgia Tech 80, Georgia 73
Charleston Southern 66 - Mississippi 65
UMKC 69 - Missouri 61

And a couple other close calls. That league's in mid-season form already.

Watching Buffalo @ UK. Tied at 20 halfway through the first half. Bobby Hurley coaches Buffalo. They just showed the Laettner shot. haha.

I'm so confused about SEC basketball. Doesn't anyone give a shit about basketball? These are big, rich programs. Why doesn't anyone make a push to join UK and Florida with any success in basketball. They love college sports..

They must just REALLY not give a shit. When you think about the number of fans they stuff into stadiums every week, it seems like they could get 15-20K into an arena a couple of times a week.

IDK, maybe there just isn't much money to be made for those schools. They can't expand their fanbases because they're already huge and well stocked with school merchandise. And most SEC fans are pretty poor, relatively speaking. Hillbillies in the backwoods of Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi etc. only have so much money to spend.
And investing in a basketball program ain't cheap, starting with coaches.

I'm sure they could find a way to make it profitable if the fans cared enough to want to become basketball relevant. That's my honest question. If they will pay out the ass to fill a hundred thousand seats in their football stadiums, you can't tell me they couldn't fill up a basketball arena if there was a decent product on the floor. It's got to be just that they don't care.

Cauley-stein just got posterized and buffalo 30-25.

Sounds like the same old Calipari Cats; unfocused, overconfident, unprepared, and overhyped. But the talent and bitching to the refs will come through in the end, good basketball be damned.

Does anybody realize that UK lost 11 games last year and was one win over UofL away from going to the NIT? And that they lost the two best players off that team?

Buffalo up 38-33 at the half. Please make my day, Bobby Hurley. Lots of good quotes for those that aren't watching.

"We're watching the demise of the platoon system 1 1/2 games into the season."

"Another one-and-done possession for UK."

They're trolling hard. lol.

Wasn't Buffalo one of the teams that led most of the game last year and then got beat by a UK parade to the free throw line in the second half? That happened a few times last year.

Probably and I'm sure it will happen again this year. Buffalo went on a little run and Towns missed two bunnies and got his rebound off the rim and lowered his shoulder and slammed it into the defenders chest and knocked him down and laid it in and they called a block. Too much of that and I'll have to turn the channel.

Yeah I turned that shit of moons ago. lol. UK started on a 9-0 run in the 2nd half. Without fuckery believe it or not. Then buffalo lost their composure and started kind of forcing it.

Pretty boring first wekend of games. Luckily it gets good this week. If you're an MSU fan, probably not liking that match up versus Duke. Notre Dame blew out the same Navy team by 39 today.

Full respect for Izzo but MSU will get ran by Duke. I guarantee it. Wouldn't surprise to see them smack the spartans by 20. They certainly pass the eye test.

Yeah, Duke also has played two of the projected worst teams in division 1 though. The main problem for MSU is they really have no big men which is why I'm playing both of Duke's versus MSU. Duke is going to work them on the boards. Kansas has a long ways to go too it appears. I like what I see out of my Heels. Friday night they weren't great but NCCU literally just took the air out of the ball, still was a comfortable 15+ for most of the game though. Tonight was a much better outing.

Will be interesting to see how the Duke freshmen respond to playing a good defense for the first time

Miami and UF on tonight. I like Donovan, a lot (hopefully Pitino's successor), but I'm pulling for the ACC in this one.

That ship is quickly sailing. Donovan is turning 50 next spring. I know Pitino has enjoyed a renaissance in his passion for the game, but he and a few other coaches are the exception not the rule. If Rick stays another 5 years, do we want to usher in a 55-year-old (assuming he would come) for maybe a decade?

Don't get me wrong... Donovan is at the top of my wish list if Pitino were gone tomorrow. But I think when the time comes, we would be better served looking at someoen a bit younger and specifically in tune with whatever the AAU/recruiting world is about.

Pitino is a good example of why you'd rather bring in a proven older coach than a potential up and comer. I can only think of a couple coaches that I'd even consider hiring over Donovan in 5 years. Greg Marshall at WSU (same age as Donavan), Shaka Smart at VCU, Sean Miller at Zona, Brad Stevens in Boston, Kevin Ollie in UConn. Richard has a long way to go if he wants that spot in 5 years. Miller and Ollie likely couldn't be lured.

During Friday night's game he proceeded to call Dean, and Roy liars about the scandal. He also spent 10 straight minutes of gameplay talking about Duke. Apparently UNC administration actually contemplated suing Fran for "slander".

Agreed, but is he the rule now? Admittedly I'm not sure. Certainly Boeheim, Coach K, even guys like Bob Huggins and Roy Williams are cut from that cloth and coaching well into their 60's and 70's. But that's about it from this particular generation of coaches. Is Donovan in that next wave of coaching "lifers" (perhaps with Calipari & Bill Self)?

If I had more certainty that he has that kind of fire and passion for the game and (even more importantly) recruiting, I'm in quicker than a heartbeat. But again, Donovan would be one of about 3 high-profile coaches of his generation with the sustained success to keep going this late into their lives.

Not the most professional, but do you think he was wrong? If that shit is going on, the coaches know about it. I don't buy that John Calipari line of BS.
