The leaving early crew - tarheels15 - 03-16-2016 01:04 PM

Hope you guys don't mind me starting up this list. Jaron Blossomgame is testing the waters, and I expect more underclassmen to do so with the new rules. Next season is going to require a lot more work to find players.

Declared:
Jaron Blossomgame
Cat Barber
Malik Beasley
Abdul Malik Abu
Demetrius Jackson

Declaring but returning:

Returning:
Grayson Allen

RE: The leaving early crew - J-Rye_UL - 03-16-2016 01:10 PM

I always like to talk about who's doing what in the offseason. Does declared mean he's already signed an agent? Blossomgame might have a solid NBA career at SF. He has the skillset and really improved his shooting.

RE: The leaving early crew - chrislindy - 03-16-2016 01:18 PM

Onuaku is testing the waters for Louisville. Did the FSU guys win their NIT opener last night? Would assume we'll hear about Bacon and Beasley once their season wraps up.

Of the teams not in the tourney, there aren't a ton of NBA prospects. No one in the underclassmen ranks at Wake, BC, GT, or VaTech. Maybe we'll hear something about Barber and Abu at NC State soon? The rest are going to be at least a week away I'm guessing.

RE: The leaving early crew - chrislindy - 03-16-2016 01:21 PM

Just found an article saying Barber will go through the evaluation process.

RE: The leaving early crew - CardsAllDay13 - 03-16-2016 01:40 PM

This is going to be fun next year. Hopefully I end up on tarheels ends of the spectrum target than, say, dhc

RE: The leaving early crew - J-Rye_UL - 03-16-2016 01:47 PM

I'm just guessing Demetrius Jackson, Grayson Allen, and Brandon Ingram are as good as gone. It wouldn't surprise me to see guys like Justin Jackson or Jamel Artis jump early and land nowhere.

RE: The leaving early crew - CardsAllDay13 - 03-16-2016 01:49 PM

I bet Meeks tries to as well. He'll buy into someone's bad advice.

RE: The leaving early crew - tarheels15 - 03-16-2016 01:52 PM

I'm pretty confident Hicks, Meeks, and Jackson are all gone for UNC. Meeks was better fat

RE: The leaving early crew - J-Rye_UL - 03-16-2016 01:54 PM

Any chance Amile Jefferson gets a redshirt and returns?

I have to blame some of his ineptitude this year on Williams' rotation or lack thereof.

His early season injury and the emergence of Hicks didn't help either

RE: The leaving early crew - tarheels15 - 03-16-2016 02:05 PM

Amile Jefferson is applying for a medical redshirt, and should be back. Roy's rotations suck but he's been giving Meeks too much latitude. Carolina is ridiculously more efficient this year with Meeks off the floor than on it. I think a lot has to do with him killing spacing. His short working area draws too many help defenders with Berry, Jackson and Paige attempting to drive. He also makes Brice Johnson less efficient as another defender is in the area for rebounding. Meeks lack of vertical kills his offensive game, and rebounding against athletic defenders. I've also been pissed off numerous times watching him attempt to hedge a ball screen on the perimeter because he is lazy as hell on defense, and can't do it properly. Roy's rotations have certainly hurt most players on the team but not Meeks. He just isn't very good.

That's two shots you've taken at me. I ignored the first. Know your role son. My first round pick missed half the year and was never right and up until the last regular season game I was vying for a spot in the tournament. Shit happens. Didn't you make a first round exit? Don't let your alligator mouth overload your hummingbird ass.

Kennedy Meeks is basically the Anti-Mathiang. Mathiang has all the effort and athleticism you could ask for from a PF/C, but he just can't seem to grasp the game of basketball. At least Meeks knows how to play, has a very nice set of hands that you just can't teach, and can finish around the rim. I don't know if Mathiang will ever grasp what Meeks has, but Meeks can definitely up his intensity if UNC is relying on him.

I think that was his point. You had some shit luck this season. I loved the CMM/Jekiri combo and never would have guessed they'd both get significantly worse.

Yea that wasn't a shot. I was getting at the fact that you had a fairly loaded team that essentially had terrible luck. No shots intended here.

I don't remember taking a first shot. If there was one it's all joking anyway.

This is the thing that always stood out to me as a reason he could (and did) get benched as the season went along. He is just an AWFUL, lazy player on the defensive end. With even a modicum of effort, he could be Devin Thomas for the Heels. But he doesn't want to move his feet and lets bigs roll to the basket like it was a pre-game lay-up line.

I know in another thread you mentioned him possibly leaving/transferring and at least one UofL fan made a post (likely joking) about him becoming a Card. Pitino would eat Meeks alive for his lack of defensive effort. There is a -1,000,000% chance of him playing for Louisville.

Maybe a bigger, more talented version of pre-pitino Ellis myles?

I was also joking. My post was meant as CEBE rivalry-ish not assholish. But my apologies.

Fair enough. I'm too new to be anyone's rival, yet.

Yeah CAD, you're way too level headed to develop any instant rivalries

RE: The leaving early crew - captainblackbeard13 - 03-17-2016 09:34 AM

Ingram is gone, I believe K confirmed it in his press conference the other day. Allen I hopewill come back and become a legend at Duke, but I fear he is gone too. Amile is definitely getting a 5th year.

Good for Amile. Always seemed like a good kid. He was having such a good senior year, hated to see him go down. Now Allen on the other hand can fuck off. If Ingram stayed, they'd be scary good.

Where is Allen going after just two years? Am I the only person who doesn't see him being anywhere near as successful in the NBA? He's not getting those dead fish flop fouls and going to the FT line 15 times a game.

Would love to see him trip someone like Draymond Green, though.

I dont see him succeeding right away but I think he could be similar to JJ Reddick eventually. He really is going to leave this year cause next year he might not be a first round pick...assuming the freshman class is as good as every thinks it is.

He'll probably leave but you pretty much posted my exact thoughts.

Your second sentence makes a lot of sense. The first seems far-fetched from this outsider's POV. Reddick was always a long-range assassing for the Dukies. As a Kyle Korver/Steve Kerr specialist, I think even the skeptics of Reddick could see a spot for him in the league. Allen doesn't strike me as a great marksman from deep. He makes his money by those herky-jerky bull runs to the basket, either converting a circus shot or drawing a foul. I do acknowledge that his stats show more threes made than I remember from watching games, so maybe he will be a team's 3-point specialist.

RE: The leaving early crew - J-Rye_UL - 03-17-2016 10:27 AM

Allen and Reddick isn't a fair comparison. Reddick is primarily a spot up shooter in the NBA, where Allen is an extremely gifted slasher who will benefit from open driving lanes in the NBA. He's going to take some hard hits that will make him reconsider those wreckless drives, but his game translates IMO. He's nowhere near the shooter that Redick was, but he's good enough, with NBA range. He strikes me as a guy that isn't content with his game and will continue to work on it no matter what level he's playing at. He'll have the same impact as an NBA rookie, as he had for Duke as a freshman. And yeah, he's a punk, but that competitive nature can be a good thing for personal gains. I'd compare him to a combo guard like Jeremy Lin.

Ron Artest or Bill Lambeer would get my vote.

RE: The leaving early crew - J-Rye_UL - 03-17-2016 02:18 PM

Allen also strikes me as a big fish in the small pond type of personality - not that there's anything wrong with that. I could see him staying at Duke just because they're in the inner circle of college basketball's finest. Why not enjoy that for another year if you aren't strapped for cash?

RE: The leaving early crew - captainblackbeard13 - 03-17-2016 08:12 PM

I have my opinion which is completely opposite pretty much everyone, from message boards to experts.

Allen dreamed his whole life of playing at duke. Played aau ball in duct tape shoes just to get his shot, he ain't gonna give it up for a chance to play in the NBA but most likely the d league like tyus jones. That option will always be there. Imo he comes back to a LOADED duke team for a chance to win a 2nd title (assuming duke doesn't win it this year), becoming a legend at Duke not just a hero, and having his jersey hung in the rafters.

Now obviously I realize the draft situation and the lure of being a first round pick, but unlike you non Dukies I can see this kids heart and love for basketball and Duke that most people ignore. That's probably why I have a feeling he will be back next year.

And coach k goes...kid ur going to the NBA.. I paid too much money for these new recruits to kick one out
